Tyler Courtroom Packed as Custody Decision for 50+ Neglected Dogs Delayed

TYLER, Texas (TXAN 24) — A packed courtroom in Tyler set the stage for the first hearing regarding the more than 50 dogs found in terrible living conditions on a Smith County property.

The hearing drew an overwhelming crowd, with many supporters filling the courtroom and even spilling into the hallway to stand up for the animals.

Dr. Gary Spence, owner of Spence and White Veterinary Hospital, shared just how significant the response has been, saying, “I’ve been practicing in Tyler for 40 years, and I’ve never seen an outpouring from the community like this.”

Nearly 60 dogs were seized from the property belonging to brothers Kerry and Michael Jones, who appeared in court for the first time since law enforcement made the discovery.

Advocate Bill Tandy also weighed in, emphasizing the purpose of the gathering: “People who came out today are showing their support for the dogs and standing against the way they’ve been treated.”

The Jones brothers are scheduled to return to court next week, with a decision on the custody of the dogs expected on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 1:30 p.m.
