TEXAS (TXAN 24) -- Matthew Dorsey, a Texas man who has spent nearly two decades behind bars, is fighting for justice after being sentenced to life in prison for an alleged aggravated assault of a public servant.
The incident that led to his conviction involved a state trooper, who testified that Dorsey never attempted to harm or run him over, yet he was still sentenced to an excessive life term.
Nearly 19 years into his sentence at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) facility, Dorsey’s legal team and family have exhausted every possible appeal, only to see their efforts ignored by Smith County and the Court of Criminal Appeals.
According to his supporters, the charges against Dorsey are based on a mistaken narrative, and the facts of the case have been overlooked by the courts.
“We know Matthew didn’t commit the crime he’s been accused of. The trooper himself testified that Matthew didn’t try to harm him, yet he was still sentenced to life in prison,” said a close family member. “We’ve done everything we can to bring attention to this injustice, but the system continues to turn a blind eye. We need the public’s help now to bring Matthew the justice he deserves.”
Dorsey’s case has gained attention from advocacy groups and legal experts who argue that the excessive sentence is not only unjust, but a violation of his constitutional rights. As he enters his 19th year of imprisonment, the call for action grows louder, with supporters urging lawmakers, the courts, and the public to help correct this grave error.
“We are asking for justice—for Matthew to be released from prison and for the truth to finally be recognized,” his family member said. “It’s time for this wrongful conviction to be overturned once and for all.”
Supporters of Dorsey are calling for renewed attention to his case, asking citizens to speak out and pressure the authorities to review the case and ensure a fair outcome. As Matthew Dorsey continues to serve time for a crime he did not commit, those closest to him are not giving up their fight for his freedom.https://www.freematthewdorsey.com/
