Revitalizing Edom: The Impact of Edom Art House on East Texas’ Art Scene

EDOM, Texas (TXAN 24 News) — Edom, Texas, once a vibrant hub for the arts, has seen a remarkable resurgence with the opening of Edom Art House, a fresh and eclectic gallery that’s reigniting the local art scene.

Founded by Justin Brown, an award-winning brand strategist and talented wire wrap jewelry artist, the gallery is more than just a place to view art; it's a beacon of creativity and economic revitalization for the community.

A Legacy of Artistic Influence

The revitalization of Edom’s art community has deep roots, tracing back to Doug Brown, no relation, (1943-2020), who opened Edom’s first pottery shop in 1971.

Doug’s unique orbital creations brought new economic growth and revitalization to the area, inspiring a diverse group of artists, including woodworkers, jewelry makers, and glass blowers, to set up shop in Edom.

His influence was further solidified with the launch of the Edom Art Festival in 1972, which attracted thousands and highlighted the town as a cultural destination.

However, after Doug’s passing, the art community in Edom experienced a significant decline. The spark that once made the town an artistic haven seemed to dim—until now.

A New Chapter for Edom’s Art Community

Edom Art House stands out as the most eclectic gallery in East Texas, showcasing a diverse range of art forms from woodwork and mosaics to fractal art, paintings, and handmade jewelry.

The gallery’s unique approach includes rotating its roster of artists and their work every four months, ensuring a constantly refreshed and dynamic display.

This strategy not only keeps the gallery exciting for visitors but also provides emerging artists with a platform to showcase their latest creations.

Justin Brown, the visionary behind the gallery, combines his expertise in branding with his passion for art to support and uplift local talent.

“I am aiming to create a place where local art collectors can come and find high-quality handmade local art, and local artists can learn how to become more professional and effectively brand and market themselves,” says Brown.

His commitment extends beyond the gallery itself; he offers classes and uses social media and storytelling to help artists build their personal brands, fostering success in the East Texas art community.

Economic Impact and Community Engagement

In its first year, Edom Art House generated $100,000 in sales, which, using a multiplier effect of 2.5, translates to an estimated $250,000 in total economic impact on the local community.

This significant contribution is a testament to the gallery's role in not only supporting local artists but also driving economic growth in Edom.

Brown did not know his economic impact prior to this article, upon finding out and when asked about the future and the impact he can make with a clear vision. "Wow! I had no clue. Imagine what I am going to be able to do with intent, considering I’ve been operating in ignorance,” he reflects. His ambition goes beyond personal success; he sees himself as a trailblazer. “I feel like if there were ever a person to be a first black anything in this town, I would be the person. I am setting a certain precedent here and I’m excited about it.”

As the gallery prepares for its next cycle, Brown is optimistic about what’s to come. “This will be the most exciting Edom Art House cycle yet,” he promises.

With his innovative approach and dedication, Justin Brown is not only revitalizing the art community but also setting a new standard for what can be achieved in East Texas.

Edom Art House continues to be a cornerstone for artistic expression and economic vitality in the region, proving that creativity and commerce can thrive together.
