JACKSONVILLE, Texas— Residents of the Sweet Union Apartments, located at 1011 U.S. 69 in Jacksonville, are raising the alarm over severe health and safety concerns in their living conditions, which have gone unaddressed for months despite repeated reports to property management.
Tenants describe the conditions as deplorable, with issues ranging from structural damage to infestations.
One tenant, who wished to remain anonymous, shared their concerns: "We have apartments with holes in the ceiling filled with mold. It's one girl who has a huge hole in her room where the wall has a leak in it, and it's wet and molded—not to mention her apartment is infested with bed bugs, and they won't exterminate. It has been like this for months, and they won't fix it."
Photographs provided by residents reveal large cracks in ceilings, sagging plaster, and visible water damage, all of which pose serious risks to the safety of the tenants.
One resident even resorted to using boards to hold up their ceiling, fearing a collapse that could harm their small children.
“As one tenant expressed, ‘I’ve been without a working oven since Thanksgiving 2023. I submitted a handwritten note detailing needed repairs, which they copied, but nothing has been fixed. My apartment has a severe roach infestation, and they refuse to address it. The appliances, including the refrigerator and oven, are unsafe and not being replaced. My bathtub hasn’t drained properly for two years. Despite putting in a work order, I was given a lease violation notice. Recently, they cut off our gas due to a leak, though we’ve been reporting a gas smell for months.’”
Despite multiple complaints, tenants report that property management has taken no action to address these hazardous conditions.
So far, no health issues have been reported, but the risk remains high, especially for families with young children.
Residents have expressed frustration at the lack of response from management, feeling that their concerns are being ignored.
They hope that bringing these issues to light through TXAN 24 News will prompt action, as no other groups have taken their claims seriously until now.
As this story develops, TXAN 24 News will continue to follow up with both the residents and the property management for their response.
In the meantime, the tenants of Sweet Union Apartments remain in limbo, waiting for the repairs and safety measures they desperately need.
