DALLAS, Texas (TXAN) -- The NBA In-Season tournament is now underway with many fans and players asking whether it is a waste of time.
According to an official release from the NBA, the inaugural In-Season Tournament tipped off on Friday, Nov. 3 and will culminate with the Championship on Saturday, Dec. 9 to take place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Here's a quick breakdown of how it works:
Group Play - All 30 teams have been randomly drawn into groups of five within their conference based on won-loss records from the 2022-23 regular season. Each team will play four designated Group Play games on “Tournament Nights” – one game against each opponent in its group, with two games at home and two on the road.
Knockout Play - Eight teams will advance to the Knockout Round Play. The Knockout Rounds will be single-elimination games in the Quarterfinals played on Monday, Dec. 4 and Tuesday, Dec. 5, to compete for a prize pool and the new In-Season Tournament trophy, the NBA Cup.
At the conclusion of the In-Season Tournament, the NBA will name the Most Valuable Player of the competition and the All-Tournament Team. Selection will be based on the players’ performance in both Group Play and the Knockout Rounds, according to the NBA.
Currently there are mixed feelings about the overall meaning of the NBA Cup and whether it is a waste of time or moving the game of basketball forward.
The league unveiled new court designs for the tournament games and has moved the Championship to Las Vegas. This could be a marketing strategy as the NBA looks to expand with two new teams in the near future.
The In-Season tournament could be a waste of time and only last one season but the underlying fact is that the NBA is testing the Las Vegas market to see if NBA Basketball can take residence in Sin City. So, all-in-all it's a waste of a good time and could very well lead up to a Las Vegas franchise in the near future.
