
TEXAS (TXAN 24) — The clock is ticking for birding enthusiasts across Texas! The 29th annual Great Texas Birding Classic is set to take flight from April 15 to May 15, but the deadline to register your team is Tuesday, April 1.
Hosted by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, this statewide event invites bird watchers of all skill levels to compete in a variety of tournaments, from casual one-location sits to intense 24-hour statewide challenges. Teams can choose their competition day within the event window, making it flexible for participants.
How to Join
Teams must register by April 1 and can select from categories such as:
• The Big Sit! – Count birds from a 50-foot circle with friends or family.
• State Park or Sunrise-to-Noon Tournaments – Ideal for a relaxed morning of birding.
• Regional & Statewide Big Day Tournaments – Competitive birding marathons covering specific regions or the entire state.
• Human-Powered Tournament – No cars allowed! Birders must travel by bike, canoe, or on foot.
• Texas Two-Stop & Weeklong Tournaments – A strategic approach, with teams birding across two days or a full week.
With Texas being one of the most diverse birding locations in the country, participants have a chance to spot a wide range of species while competing for prizes. The event also funds bird conservation efforts, making it a win for nature lovers and wildlife alike.
