AUSTIN, TX – Dr. Jamey Harrison has been named the next Executive Director of the University Interscholastic League (UIL), stepping into the role on April 1, 2025. He will replace longtime director Dr. Charles Breithaupt, who is set to retire on August 31 after leading the organization since 2009.
Harrison has been a key figure within UIL for over a decade, serving as Deputy Executive Director since 2011. During that time, he played a major role in shaping the organization’s policies and overseeing all departments. He has also led UIL’s government relations efforts and rulemaking processes, making him a natural choice to lead the organization into the future.
Under Harrison’s leadership, UIL has implemented major changes to improve competitive balance, including adding a sixth conference and restructuring playoff brackets for all team sports. His work in advancing UIL’s use of technology, particularly in realignment and classification mapping, has also had a lasting impact. Additionally, Harrison helped guide UIL through critical challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and responses to severe weather events.
“I am deeply honored to step into this role and continue serving Texas students and schools through the UIL,” Harrison said. “The opportunities UIL provides go beyond competition—they shape character, unite communities, and create lifelong memories. I look forward to building on this legacy while preserving what makes UIL great.”
Before joining UIL, Harrison worked as the Superintendent of Schools for Bridge City ISD and held various roles in education, including teacher, coach, principal, and deputy superintendent. He is also active in national high school athletics organizations, having served on multiple committees for the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).
A native of Hardin-Jefferson High School, Harrison earned his undergraduate and Master of Education degrees from Lamar University and later completed his doctoral degree at The University of Texas at Austin.
The UIL, which was founded in 1910, is the largest inter-school organization of its kind, serving more than 1,400 member schools and over one million student participants in academic, athletic, and music competitions.
Harrison’s appointment marks only the eighth leadership change in UIL history, a sign of the stability and tradition of the organization. His extensive experience within UIL and deep ties to Texas education suggest a smooth transition as he takes the helm.
