TYLER, Texas (TXAN 24) — A Saturday night of live music and community at Bricks Bar has sparked growing concern about the role of law enforcement in Downtown Tyler. In a public statement released Sunday, the venue raised serious questions about what it described as an excessive and intimidating police presence outside an Impulse Entertainment event held April 6.

According to the statement, uniformed and undercover officers from the Tyler Police Department and other agencies were stationed throughout the surrounding area, stopping attendees for what Bricks described as minor or unfounded traffic issues — including license plate light violations and stop sign compliance.

Bricks Bar said the event inside unfolded peacefully and drew a diverse, respectful crowd. However, they expressed concern that local authorities had made unfair assumptions about the nature of the event, particularly in relation to gang activity.

The venue also pointed to a pattern of increased law enforcement presence at cultural events tied to Hip-Hop, Rap, and Latin music. They referenced ongoing actions by Mayor Don Warren and Police Chief David Long that, in their view, contribute to a less inclusive downtown atmosphere.

Attendees who felt they were unfairly stopped or harassed are being encouraged to email their experiences to Bricksbg20@gmail.com.

TXAN 24 News will be reaching out to Bricks Bar and Mayor Don Warren on Monday for an exclusive interview.
